Children grow so fast. One day they are in diapers and need absolutely everything from you and then next, they are running around playing with friends and getting ready to start preschool. But how do you know when they are ready to begin preschool? In today’s post, we are going to discuss a few things to look for in your child to decide if they are ready to attend preschool.

Age

The first way to decide whether your child is ready for preschool is by their age. Preschools usually accept children from ages three to five, although it may vary slightly depending upon the institution. You should check with your local preschool to see if your child meets the age requirement to begin preschool.

Potty Training

Typically children beginning preschool need to be potty trained. If your child is not yet potty trained, you may want to wait until they get a bit more training under their belt before you enroll them. Children all learn and develop at their own rate, but this is usually a requirement for a child to begin preschool.

Communication Skills

Children who are ready to begin preschool should have some communication skills. They should be able to ask when they need something and communicate when something is wrong. They will be expected to interact with their teachers, staff, and classmates, so communication is extremely important. This is also a skill that they will continue to develop as they attend preschool.

Independence

While children are not expected to have the independence of teens or adults, they should be exhibiting some desire to be independent of their parents. You’ll have to leave your child at the preschool for a few hours at a time. Your child will get the most out of the experience if they are ready to leave your side occasionally and play with their peers.

Napping Schedule

Preschool is an interactive learning environment, so if your child is going to get the most out of the experience, it’s important that their napping schedule will not interrupt their day. While preschool teachers expect their children to get a bit tired and grumpy occasionally, children should have enough stamina to get through the day.
