How to Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude in Your Children, Part 1

August 15, 2019

November officially kicks off the three biggest holidays of the year: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. First up is Thanksgiving, a day set aside by Abraham Lincoln so that we can all remember our blessings.

Here at Lil’ Rascals Academy in Broward County, we are very grateful for you entrusting your children to our care. With four locations to serve you in Florida, we offer childcare for infants on up through age 12, including after school care and summer camps. For over 30 years, we’ve been providing your children with excellent daycare services. We utilize the Creative Curriculum, which teaches children through purposeful play. We love to nurture your children in a safe, fun, and educational environment. In this blog post, we’ll go over how you can cultivate an attitude of gratitude in your child this holiday season. HOW TO CULTIVATE AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE IN YOUR CHILDREN

Model Gratitude

From the earliest age, our children learn by watching us. They imitate what we do, and they want to be like us because they love us. When you are grateful for things in this world, your kids will see that and be grateful as well. From simply saying thank you when someone holds the door open for you at a store to giving thanks for your many blessings, your children can learn to appreciate what they have as well. Tell your kids that you are grateful for them, and be specific. Tell them you are grateful how nice they were to their grandparents when they helped them rake leaves, and how you are grateful when you get hugs from them. The little gratitudes will add up.

Remember Your Blessings

Many people have the tradition of gathering around their Thanksgiving table and listing the things they are grateful for. This is a great tradition, but this tradition can be reinforced by remembering your blessings every day. Lil’ Rascals Academy in Broward County recommends you encourage your children to keep gratitude journals where they can write down on a daily basis what they are grateful for. This can be challenging to do, especially for smaller children. However, you can help them out by assisting them in the beginning. Blessings can be small things, like how Susie shared a cookie with your child while at school or how your child was grateful to have a pet cat at home to pet. Most gratitudes will be small, but they will grow into a big attitude of gratitude as your child ages.
